What information is included in the Extreme Cold pack?

Keep pets inside – Cats should not be taken outside during winter, and dogs should only be taken out for walks.

Keep pets sheltered – Ensure pets have access to a shelter that keeps them out of the rain, is big enough to be comfortable, and is lifted off of the ground. If you can, keep pets inside during extreme cold weather, especially at night.

Keep pets warm– Your dog might benefit from wearing a vest, especially if they’re small or short-haired. Wearing boots will also protect their paws from the ice and the snow-melting chemicals, which can cause burns, irritation, and poisoning.

Keep pets clean – Dry your dog when getting home. Always clean their paws and stomach, especially if they are short legged, because the chemicals used to melt snow are toxic if your pet licks them off!

Keep pets well-fed – Staying warm in the winter takes more energy. Dogs and cats might need a bit more nutrition during these cold months – talk to your vet for more information. Be careful about not overfeeding your pet.

Antifreeze – Antifreeze is super toxic to pets, but it’s sweet, and your pet might be tempted to take a lick. Don’t use antifreeze on outdoor water features your pet has access to, and clean any spills promptly. If you must use it, opt for an alternative, such as propylene glycol, which is less toxic if ingested.

Salt grit – Salt is commonly used to help melt snow and ice on the streets. However, it is toxic to pets! Pets might ingest it while outside, or they might groom it off their fur when they return home. To avoid this, keep your pet indoors, supervise any outdoor activities, and ensure you thoroughly clean and dry their fur when returning home, focusing particularly on your pet’s paws and belly.
