Animals are more sensitive to sound than us. That, combined with not understanding what’s happening, makes firework noises very stressful for them! Luckily, you can reduce the effect fireworks have on your pet by preparing early.

If you want to help your pet be relaxed and happy during firework season, you need to:

Make a safe den – A few weeks before major fireworks, set aside a space in your home where your pets can feel safe.

Reward your animals when they are relaxing there. This will let them know this is a safe space they can go to if they’re distressed. Then insulate it with plenty of fabric and blankets to muffle the sound!

Use pheromone products – These are scents too faint for humans to smell, but that help your pets calm down. Use them around the house, and especially around their den, before fireworks start.

Move small pets – Take small pets, such as rabbits and guinea pigs, to a quiet place indoors, and provide lots of bedding to mask the sounds.

Curtains and background noise – Before fireworks start, close the curtains and provide background noise to muffle the sound.

Keep calm – If you are stressed, that will make your pets more anxious. Keeping calm ensures you can be a comforting presence for them!

Don’t punish your pet for being afraid – If they toilet in the house, it’s not their fault. Don’t punish your pet for being scared.

Start preparing – The earlier you start training your pets, the better they’ll do when celebrations start.
